New England Woodcarvers Members who have entered carvings in the Master Class Competitions or NEWC Members who have done a carving they believe has appeal, quality, and merits exhibition are invited to enter their work for exhibition. Sailfest is visited by over 300,000 people. Banks Street and others will be closed to vehicle traffic so thousands of pedestrians can walk around and view all the venues.

The Sailfest organizers and John Johnson, a well-known art dealer who owns Thames River Gallery, are excited to work with New England Woodcarvers and will promote our exhibit in their publicity campaign. This is your chance to show your work in a high-quality studio. John can work with you if you want to sell items or just exhibit them. He can appraise and help you establish prices if you wish.

The deadline to register is June 30th! Friday, July 8th will be used to set up the Exhibit. Register early, bring your carving(s) early so it will be ready for the heavy tourist traffic which begins in the afternoon. The Gallery is working with Christopher LaMontagne to do a chainsaw carving of a lighthouse. Chris’s work can be seen on YouTube. Tents will be erected on the sidewalk for carvers or clubs to put on demonstrations.

If you wish to enter there will be a registration form on the NEWC website with entry fees and guidelines. All entry fees go to NEWC. Entry fees are: $20 for first entry. $15 for second entry. $10 for each additional entry. Gallery and NEWC reserve the right to limit entries. A photo of each entry must be submitted with registration form.

Layout and positioning decisions will be made by the Gallery staff. Your carving(s) can be dropped off at the Gallery as early as a week before the Exhibit or earlier if you make arrangements with the staff. Carving(s) can also be shipped to the Gallery and will be handled carefully by the staff. They can also return your carving(s) if you make arrangements with them. The building is secure, and the staff is experienced with handling artwork. Carvings may be picked up starting Monday, July 11th or left at the Gallery until you can arrange a pickup time during business hours the following week.

There are plenty of hotels in the area, but reservations should be made early to secure a room. Foxwoods is close by, and they have donated $125,000 for the fireworks display on Saturday.

There will be judging of the exhibits by a panel of city celebrities and the top five voted the best for the Sailfest NEWC Exhibit will receive frameable quality certificates recognizing them as Master Sailfest Carvers. These carvers will be announced at 2 pm on Saturday. All five carvers will receive the same award.

There will also be a People’s Choice award given to the top ten exhibits chosen by the public and they will be recognized with a frameable quality certificate. All ten carvers will receive the same award. This is an exhibit, and any entry will also be able to be entered in The Spirit of Wood Show in October 2022.

More details will be posted on our NEWC Website and in future NEWC Newsletters. You must be a current member of NEWC to enter so join or renew to take advantage of NEWC news and events as we “Carve out or future in the digital age.”
